Seminar title :

Physical and biological uncertainties in ion beam therapy

abstract:

The main advantages of ion beam therapy are the reduced total energy deposited in the patient as compared to conventional techniques and the finite range of the ion beam. The latter adds an additional degree of freedom to treatment planning. The range in tissue is associated with considerable uncertainties caused by imaging, patient setup, beam delivery, and dose calculation. Reducing the uncertainties would allow a reduction of the treatment volume and thus allow a better utilization of the advantages of ion beams.

The seminar will summarize my current work aiming at a quantification and reduction of physical and biological uncertainties in ion beam therapy. In particular, I will present my research on ion radiography to increase the accuracy of range prediction in the patient and on uncertainties due to biological effects. I will also discuss the role of Monte Carlo methods as efficient modeling tool in ion beam therapy.

The seminar will be held in Aula seminari on 12/04/2016 at 12:00
